Pipettityypit refers to the different types of pipettes used in laboratories for dispensing precise volumes of liquids. The most common categories are air-displacement pipettes and positive-displacement pipettes. Air-displacement pipettes, like the widely used micropipettes, operate by creating an air cushion between the piston and the liquid. These are suitable for most aqueous solutions and organic solvents. They are available in fixed or adjustable volume models.

Positive-displacement pipettes, on the other hand, function more like a syringe, with the piston forming a direct seal with the liquid. This design is ideal for viscous, volatile, or dense liquids that might not be accurately dispensed with air-displacement pipettes. They are often used for samples like oils, blood, or reagents that tend to adhere to surfaces.

Beyond these primary classifications, pipettes can also be categorized by their intended use or design. For instance, volumetric pipettes are designed to deliver a single, fixed volume with high accuracy and are often used for preparing solutions or titrations. Graduated pipettes, with markings along their length, allow for the delivery of variable volumes within their capacity. Serological pipettes are typically larger and graduated, used for transferring larger volumes, while Pasteur pipettes are simple glass tubes used for transferring small, non-critical volumes. The selection of the appropriate pipette type is crucial for ensuring accurate and reproducible experimental results.
