Pimiötyö

Pimiötyö refers to the process of developing photographic film in a darkroom. This involves a series of chemical treatments to convert the latent image captured on the film into a visible and permanent image. The process typically begins with the film being loaded into a light-tight developing tank.

The first step is to immerse the film in a developer solution. This chemical reacts with the silver halide crystals that have been exposed to light during photography, converting them into metallic silver. The duration of development is crucial and depends on the type of film, developer, and desired contrast. Following development, the film is rinsed and then placed in a stop bath, usually a dilute acetic acid solution, to halt the action of the developer.

Next, the film undergoes fixation. The fixer solution dissolves the unexposed silver halide crystals, rendering the image permanent and insensitive to further light exposure. After fixation, the film is washed thoroughly in water to remove any residual chemicals. Finally, the film is dried, often by hanging it in a dust-free environment or using a specialized drying cabinet. The entire pimiötyö process requires precise control of temperature, time, and chemical concentrations to achieve optimal results.
