Pijacu

Pijacu is a small rural settlement located in the northern part of Montenegro, within the municipality of Plužine. The village sits at an altitude of approximately 1,200 metres above sea level, surrounded by pine forests and alpine meadows that characterize the Durmitor mountain range.

The name Pijacu is believed to derive from the Montenegrin word for "basket" (pi, pi), referring historically to the basket‑weaving trade that once flourished in the area. Historical records mention the village in the late 17th century as belonging to a noble family of the Bosnian Paurić lineage. The population has fluctuated over time, reaching a peak of around 300 inhabitants in the early 20th century; today, estimates suggest a population of about 80 residents, primarily engaged in livestock rearing and subsistence agriculture.

Economically, Pijacu relies on pastoralism, with sheep and goat herding dominating the local landscape. The proximity to the Plužina trout breeding reservoir also provides limited fishing opportunities. In recent years, the village has benefited from eco‑tourism initiatives that promote hiking, bird watching, and the study of alpine flora.

Cultural life in Pijacu reflects broader Montenegrin traditions, with folk music and dances performed during the annual St. George’s Day celebrations. The village maintains a small communal chapel, used for religious services and community gatherings. Despite its size, Pijacu represents the resilient rural heritage of Montenegro's mountain communities.
