When considering the limit of a function f(x) as x approaches a value c, denoted as lim x→c f(x) = L, it means that as x gets arbitrarily close to c, the value of f(x) gets arbitrarily close to L, without necessarily being equal to L at c. Similarly, for sequences, the limit describes the value a sequence converges to as the index tends to infinity.

The rigorous definition of a limit, often attributed to Cauchy and Weierstrass, uses epsilon-delta (ε-δ) arguments. For a function, it states that for every ε > 0, there exists a δ > 0 such that if 0 < |x - c| < δ, then |f(x) - L| < ε. This formalizes the idea of "arbitrarily close."
