Piikkiös

Piikkiös is a former municipality in the Southwest Finland region. It is now part of the city of Kaarina. The municipality was located in the province of Finland Proper. Piikkiös is situated on the coast of the Archipelago Sea. The area has a long history of settlement, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Stone Age.

The name "Piikkiös" is believed to derive from the Finnish word "piikki," meaning thorn or spike, possibly referring to the landscape or vegetation. Historically, the region was known for its agricultural lands and fishing. Over time, it developed into a more suburban area with a growing population. The municipality was officially established in 1893.

The municipality of Piikkiös had a total area of 103.45 square kilometers, of which 63.28 square kilometers was land and 40.17 square kilometers was water. Its population was 3,146 as of 2008. The main administrative and cultural center was the village of Piikkiö.

In 2009, Piikkiös was consolidated with the neighboring municipality of Kaarina. This merger aimed to streamline public services and strengthen the regional economy. Despite no longer being an independent municipality, the area of Piikkiös retains its distinct identity and community. The former municipal area is characterized by a mix of residential areas, green spaces, and coastal landscapes.
