Pigmentepitheel refers to a layer of pigmented epithelial cells found in various parts of the body, most notably in the retina of the eye and the skin. In the retina, the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a single layer of cells located between the photoreceptor cells and the choroid. This specialized epithelium plays a crucial role in the maintenance and function of the photoreceptors. The RPE absorbs scattered light, preventing reflection within the eye that could degrade image quality. It also transports nutrients and oxygen to the photoreceptors and removes waste products. Furthermore, the RPE participates in the visual cycle, a process essential for the regeneration of photopigments. Damage or dysfunction of the RPE can lead to various retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration.

In the skin, pigment epithelial cells, often referred to as melanocytes, are responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives skin, hair, and eyes their color. Melanocytes are found in the epidermis and are responsible for protecting the skin from the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. They transfer melanin to surrounding keratinocytes, forming a protective cap over the nucleus. The distribution and amount of melanin produced by melanocytes determine an individual's skin tone and their susceptibility to sunburn and skin cancer. Variations in melanocyte activity or number can result in conditions like vitiligo or hyperpigmentation.
