Phox
Phox is a term used in different contexts, notably in biology and in music.
In biology, phox refers to components of the phagocyte NADPH oxidase complex, an enzyme system in white blood cells that generates reactive oxygen species to kill engulfed pathogens. Subunits commonly named with the suffix phox include gp91phox (also known as NOX2), p22phox, p47phox, p67phox, and p40phox. The word phox reflects “phagocyte oxidase.” Defects in these components can lead to chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), a primary immunodeficiency characterized by recurrent bacterial and fungal infections. The phox family is part of a broader set of NOX/NADPH oxidases that produce reactive oxygen species for host defense and cellular signaling.
In music, Phox denotes an American indie folk band formed in Baraboo, Wisconsin, in the early 2010s.
