Photovolatilization

Photovolatilization is a process where light energy causes volatile compounds to evaporate or sublimate from a surface. This phenomenon is particularly relevant in the study of surfaces exposed to sunlight or other light sources, such as in environmental science, materials science, and even in planetary science. When photons from light strike a surface containing volatile substances, the energy absorbed can be sufficient to overcome the intermolecular forces holding these substances in their condensed phase. On celestial bodies, photovolatilization can explain the release of gases from icy surfaces, contributing to thin atmospheres or temporary gas plumes.
