Philippeville

Philippeville is a town and commune in the province of Namur, Wallonia, Belgium. It is situated in the Ardennes region, near the border with France. The town is built around the confluence of the rivers Eau Blanche and Eau Noire, which merge to form the river Viroin.

Historically, Philippeville was established in 1555 by Mary of Hungary, the sister of Emperor Charles V, and was named in honor of her brother, Philip II of Spain. It was intended as a strategic fortress to defend the region against French incursions. The town's fortifications were significant and played a role in various conflicts throughout the centuries. Much of the original Vauban-designed fortifications remain, making it a notable example of 17th-century military architecture.
