Pharaons

Pharaohs were the rulers of ancient Egypt, regarded as political and religious leaders who embodied ma'at, the order and balance of the cosmos. The English word pharaoh derives from the Egyptian term per-aa, meaning “great house,” originally referring to the royal palace and later to the king himself. In life, the pharaoh was viewed as the living Horus; in death, associated with Osiris, serving as the intermediary between gods and people.

Pharaohs held broad authority, commanding the army, directing government and religion, and overseeing major building projects and public works. They were responsible for maintaining the Nile floods and irrigation, ensuring prosperity and security. Their legitimate rule was reinforced through temple cults, rituals, and a complex administration that included viziers, priests, scribes, and provincial governors.

Egyptian monarchs belonged to dynasties that spanned from the Early Dynastic Period (c. 3100 BCE) to the end of native rule in the Ptolemaic era (4th–1st centuries BCE). In the Old Kingdom, pharaohs built the great pyramids; in the New Kingdom, they pursued extensive temple building and monumental tombs, especially in the Valley of the Kings. The pharaoh’s name and titulary appeared on monuments, seals, and papyri.

Notable pharaohs include Narmer, Djoser, Sneferu, Khufu, Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun, Ramesses II, and Cleopatra VII, the last ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty. After Cleopatra VII, Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire, but the figure of the pharaoh remains a central symbol in Egyptology and popular culture.
