Pfähler

Pfähler is a small municipality located in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Situated in the historic region of Pomerania, the village lies along the Peene River, approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Greifswald and 30 kilometers southwest of Stralsund. The area is characterized by its scenic landscapes, including forests, lakes, and rivers, which contribute to its rural charm.

The origins of Pfähler date back to medieval times, with early references appearing in historical records from the 13th century. The name likely derives from the Old Slavic word plah, meaning "field" or "plain," reflecting the village’s original location in an open agricultural area. Over the centuries, Pfähler remained a modest farming community, with its economy traditionally centered around agriculture and forestry. During the 20th century, Pfähler experienced the political and economic shifts common to East Germany, becoming part of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) after World War II. Pfähler is part of the Amt (municipal association) of Am Peenestrom, which coordinates administrative and infrastructural services for its member communities.
