Pex7reseptorit, also known as peroxisome biogenesis factor 7, are proteins involved in the biogenesis of peroxisomes. Peroxisomes are small organelles found in eukaryotic cells that perform various metabolic functions, including lipid metabolism, detoxification, and the breakdown of fatty acids. Pex7 is a key component of the peroxisomal protein import machinery.

The import of proteins into peroxisomes is a complex process that requires a set of specialized proteins called peroxin proteins (Pex proteins). Pex7 is a receptor that recognizes and binds to a specific targeting signal present on many peroxisomal matrix proteins, known as the peroxisomal targeting signal type 2 (PTS2). Once Pex7 has bound to a PTS2-containing protein, it facilitates its translocation into the peroxisome.

Pex7 interacts with other Pex proteins, such as Pex14 and Pex10, to form a functional import complex. This complex mediates the docking and translocation of cargo proteins across the peroxisomal membrane. Defects in Pex7 function can lead to impaired peroxisome biogenesis and can result in a class of genetic disorders known as peroxisome biogenesis disorders (PBDs). These disorders can have severe clinical manifestations affecting multiple organ systems. Research into Pex7 receptors continues to shed light on the intricate mechanisms of peroxisome formation and function, as well as the molecular basis of related diseases.
