Perusoksidia

Perusoksidia is a term used in Finnish chemistry to describe basic oxides. These are compounds formed between a metal and oxygen, where the metal is in a low oxidation state. In water, basic oxides react to form bases or hydroxides. For example, sodium oxide (Na2O) reacts with water to form sodium hydroxide (NaOH), a strong base. Similarly, calcium oxide (CaO), commonly known as quicklime, reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), also a base.

The reactivity of basic oxides varies depending on the metal. Alkali metals and alkaline earth metals form particularly strong basic oxides. As one moves across the periodic table from left to right, the tendency to form basic oxides decreases, and the tendency to form acidic oxides increases. Transition metals can form oxides that exhibit both basic and amphoteric properties, meaning they can react with both acids and bases. The term "perusoksidia" specifically refers to those oxides that predominantly display basic characteristics. Their formation and reactions are fundamental concepts in inorganic chemistry, with applications in various industrial processes.
