Periodenzeit

Periodenzeit is a German term that translates literally to “period time.” In the context of periodic phenomena, it refers to the duration of one complete cycle after which the state of the system repeats. In practice, German-language texts most often use the words Periode or Periodendauer for this concept; Periodenzeit is less common and may appear as a translation from English.

In mathematical and physical descriptions, the Periodenzeit T is linked to the frequency f of a periodic signal by the relation T = 1/f. Conversely, f = 1/T. If the phenomenon is described in terms of angular frequency ω, then T = 2π/ω. For discrete-time signals, the period can be expressed as T = N/fs, where N is the number of samples in one cycle and fs is the sampling frequency.

Examples help illustrate the concept. A 50 Hz electric mains signal has a Periodenzeit of T = 1/50 s = 20 milliseconds. A waveform with frequency 60 Hz has T = 1/60 s ≈ 16.7 milliseconds. In mechanical or biological cycles, the same idea applies: the period is the time between successive identical states, such as one complete oscillation or one heartbeat cycle.

Usage notes: in most German technical literature, Periode or Periodendauer is preferred over Periodenzeit. When encountered, Periodenzeit should be interpreted as a direct, though less common, designation for the duration of one cycle. See also period, frequency, and angular frequency.
