Penicillinfelfedezése, meaning the discovery of penicillin, is a pivotal event in medical history. It refers to the serendipitous observation by Scottish physician and microbiologist Alexander Fleming in 1928. Fleming was working with Staphylococcus bacteria in his laboratory at St. Mary's Hospital in London. Upon returning from a holiday, he noticed that one of his Petri dishes, which had been contaminated with a mold, showed a clear zone around the mold where the bacteria had been killed.

Fleming identified the mold as Penicillium notatum and deduced that it was producing a substance that inhibited bacterial growth. He named this substance penicillin. While Fleming recognized the therapeutic potential of penicillin, he struggled to isolate and purify it in sufficient quantities for widespread use. His initial findings were published in 1929 but did not immediately lead to a practical medicine.

The true potential of penicillin was realized during World War II. A team of scientists at the University of Oxford, led by Howard Florey and Ernst Chain, picked up Fleming's research in the late 1930s. They successfully developed methods for purifying and mass-producing penicillin. This breakthrough revolutionized the treatment of bacterial infections, saving countless lives on the battlefield and in civilian populations. The discovery and development of penicillin earned Fleming, Florey, and Chain the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945. Penicillin marked the dawn of the antibiotic era, fundamentally changing medicine and public health.
