Penetranttitestaus, also known as liquid penetrant testing (PT) or dye penetrant inspection (DPI), is a widely used, non-destructive testing (NDT) method for detecting surface-breaking defects in a wide variety of materials. It is particularly effective for identifying flaws such as cracks, porosity, laps, and seams that are open to the surface. The process relies on the ability of a liquid penetrant to seep into these surface discontinuities.

The procedure typically involves several steps. First, the surface of the test object is thoroughly cleaned to remove any contaminants that might hinder the penetrant's entry into defects. Next, a liquid penetrant, which may be visible or fluorescent, is applied to the cleaned surface. This penetrant is allowed to dwell for a specific period, enabling it to seep into any surface-breaking flaws through capillary action.

After the dwell time, excess penetrant is removed from the surface. It is crucial to remove all surface penetrant without washing it out of the defects. Following this, a developer is applied. The developer acts as a blotter, drawing the penetrant out of the discontinuities and spreading it onto the surface, making the indications more visible. Finally, the surface is inspected under appropriate lighting conditions. Visible penetrants are viewed under white light, while fluorescent penetrants require a black light (UV-A). The presence and nature of the indications reveal the location, size, and type of surface defects. Penetrant testing is versatile and can be used on metals, ceramics, and some plastics.
