Pehmekapselit

Pehmekapselit, often translated as softgels or soft capsules, are a type of oral dosage form for medications and supplements. They consist of an outer shell made from gelatin, water, and a plasticizer like glycerol, which encloses a liquid or semi-solid fill material. This fill can contain active ingredients dissolved or suspended in oil, water, or other solvents.

The production of pehmekapselit involves encapsulating the fill material within the rapidly forming gelatin shell. This process typically uses rotary die encapsulation machinery, where two broad sheets of gelatin are formed, filled, and sealed simultaneously between two rotating dies. The resulting capsules are then dried and polished.

Pehmekapselit offer several advantages. The liquid fill allows for faster absorption of active ingredients compared to solid dosage forms, potentially leading to quicker onset of action. They are also effective at masking unpleasant tastes and odors of certain substances, making them easier to swallow. Furthermore, the softgel form can protect sensitive ingredients from degradation due to oxidation or moisture.
