PbIV
PbIV is a chemical compound with the formula PbI4. It is a lead(IV) iodide, a salt of lead in its +4 oxidation state. PbIV is a dark red crystalline solid at room temperature. It is highly reactive and sensitive to light and moisture, decomposing rapidly to form lead(II) iodide (PbI2) and iodine (I2). The compound is primarily of interest in the field of chemistry for its unusual oxidation state of lead and its role in the synthesis of other lead compounds. PbIV can be synthesized by the reaction of lead(II) iodide with iodine in the presence of a strong oxidizing agent, such as hydrogen peroxide or potassium permanganate. The compound has been studied for its potential applications in photovoltaic devices and as a precursor in the synthesis of other lead-based materials. However, its high reactivity and sensitivity limit its practical use.
