Patch panels are passive devices that serve as centralized termination points for copper or fiber cabling in a network or telecom system. They organize and route cable runs from end-user outlets, equipment rooms, and distribution frames, while providing a stable interface to active equipment such as switches and servers.

Most common patch panels are 19-inch rack-mount units with a front face containing multiple ports. Copper patch panels terminate twisted-pair cables (Cat5e/6/6a/7) into RJ-45 connectors; fiber patch panels terminate optical fiber into SC, LC, or other connectors and can be single- or multi-fiber. Modules can be modular and hot-swappable; some are fixed. They are typically used with patch cords to connect to devices, enabling reconfiguration without touching active equipment cabling.

Advantages of patch panels include simplified changes, improved testing and troubleshooting, reduced wear on cable terminations, and better labeling and inventory management. They are a key component of structured cabling, aligned with standards such as TIA/EIA-568 and ISO/IEC 11801.

Placement and use are common in data centers, server rooms, and telecom closets. Patch panels are usually installed in 19-inch racks or wall-mounted enclosures, with fiber patch panels sometimes housed in separate cabinets. Effective implementation emphasizes clear labeling, adherence to bend radii, and supporting cable management to maintain organization and performance.
