Participiumként

Participiumként is a term used in Hungarian grammar to describe when a non-finite verb form, specifically a participle, is used in the function of a participle in a sentence. In Hungarian, participles (melléknévi igenév) form adjectives or participate in participial phrases. The common participial forms come from suffixes such as -ó/-ő for present participles (olvasó, futó) and -ott/-ett/-ött for past participles (olvasott, írt, készített). When these forms modify a noun or appear in a predicative position without a finite verb, they are used as participiumként.

Usage of participial forms as participiumként includes both attributive and adverbial functions. Attributive participles modify a noun, as in az olvasott könyvet, where the participle describes the book as something that has been read. Adverbial participles form participial phrases that express circumstance or time, such as Megérkezve a városba, fáradtan ültünk le, meaning “Having arrived in the city, we sat down, tired.”
