Partecipata

Partecipata is the feminine singular past participle of the Italian verb partecipare (to participate). As an adjective, it agrees in gender and number with the noun it modifies and conveys the sense of involvement or co-participation. The masculine singular form is partecipato, the plural forms are partecipati (masc.) and partecipate (fem.). The past participle is used in compound tenses with the auxiliary avere, for example ho partecipato.

In common usage, partecipata occurs in two broad domains. In public administration and business, the term is widely used in phrases such as societa partecipata and ente partecipato to describe a company or public entity in which a government body, such as a municipality or region, holds an equity stake or exercises control. This concept has been prominent in Italy, where many public-sector entities and utilities have been organized as partecipate or have governance arrangements that involve citizen or stakeholder participation, though reforms and governance practices have evolved over time.

In the political and civic domain, partecipata appears in expressions that emphasize citizen involvement in decision-making, such as democrazia partecipata (participatory democracy), bilancio partecipato (participatory budgeting), and processi partecipativi (participatory processes). These terms reflect an emphasis on broadening public engagement beyond traditional representative mechanisms.
