Parkinsonism is a general term for a group of neurological disorders that cause problems with movement. These problems are typically characterized by a combination of symptoms that affect the control of the body's movement. The most common form of parkinsonism is Parkinson's disease. Other causes of parkinsonism can include certain medications, other neurodegenerative diseases, or head injuries.

The core symptoms of parkinsonism are tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and postural instability. Tremor often appears as a resting tremor, meaning it occurs when the limb is at rest and decreases with voluntary movement. Rigidity refers to stiffness or resistance to passive movement of the limbs. Bradykinesia is a noticeable slowness in initiating and executing movements, which can affect activities like walking, dressing, or writing. Postural instability leads to a tendency to fall due to impaired balance.

Diagnosis of parkinsonism relies on a clinical examination of the patient's motor symptoms. There is no single definitive diagnostic test. Medical history, neurological examination, and sometimes response to medications like levodopa are used to identify and differentiate between various causes of parkinsonism. Treatment aims to manage the symptoms and improve the quality of life for affected individuals. While there is no cure for most forms of parkinsonism, therapies can help control motor symptoms.
