Pariwisata is the Indonesian term for tourism, defined as the activity of people traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for leisure, business, culture, or religious purposes. It encompasses the planning, delivery, and experience of travel, including accommodations, attractions, transport, guides, and related services that enable visitors to engage with destinations.

The sector covers domestic tourism, inbound international tourism, and outbound travel by residents, as well as events, culinary experiences, nature-based activities, and heritage and religious sites. Digital platforms for bookings, itineraries, and reviews have become increasingly important in shaping travel patterns and service delivery.

Tourism can generate income, jobs, and foreign exchange, and it supports regional development and cultural exchange. At the same time, it may cause environmental strain, resource use, price pressures, and social disruption if not managed responsibly. The balance between growth and preservation is a central concern for destinations.

Governance and sustainability are pursued through regulatory frameworks, destination management, environmental safeguards, community involvement, and certification programs in Indonesia. Effective governance seeks to maximize economic and social benefits while minimizing negative impacts on ecosystems, culture, and local livelihoods.

Current trends in pariwisata include the expansion of digital platforms, data-driven planning, resilient post-pandemic recovery, and a growing emphasis on ecotourism, cultural heritage, and inclusive travel. Sustainable development remains a core objective for many stakeholders in Indonesia’s tourism sector.
