Pariteettitietoja, known in English as parity information or parity data, is a concept primarily used in computing and data storage to ensure data integrity. It's a form of error detection that relies on a simple mathematical principle. At its core, parity information is a bit added to a group of bits, such as a byte, to make the total number of '1' bits either even or odd.

There are two main types of parity: even parity and odd parity. With even parity, the parity bit is set to '0' or '1' so that the total count of '1's in the byte, including the parity bit itself, is an even number. Conversely, with odd parity, the parity bit is adjusted to make the total count of '1's an odd number.

When data is transmitted or stored, the parity bit is calculated and appended. Upon retrieval or reception, the parity is recalculated from the received data bits. If the recalculated parity matches the received parity bit, it's assumed that the data has been transmitted or stored without errors. If there's a mismatch, it indicates that an error has occurred.

Parity checking is a basic but effective method for detecting single-bit errors. However, it has limitations. It cannot detect errors where an even number of bits have been flipped, nor can it correct the errors it detects. More sophisticated error detection and correction codes, such as Hamming codes or Reed-Solomon codes, are used for scenarios requiring higher reliability and error correction capabilities. Despite its simplicity, parity remains a fundamental concept in understanding data integrity and basic error detection mechanisms.
