Parasitprøver

Parasitprøver, often referred to as stool samples or fecal tests, are diagnostic examinations performed to detect the presence of parasitic infections in the gastrointestinal tract. These tests are crucial for identifying a wide range of parasites, including protozoa (like Giardia and Cryptosporidium) and helminths (such as roundworms, tapeworms, and hookworms).

The process typically involves collecting a fresh stool sample. In some cases, multiple samples may be required over a period of several days to increase the chances of detection, as parasite shedding can be intermittent. The collected sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. Laboratory technicians examine the sample under a microscope, looking for characteristic features of parasites or their eggs. Symptoms that might prompt a doctor to order a parasitprøve include persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, and blood or mucus in the stool. Accurate identification of the specific parasite is vital for effective treatment, as different parasites require different medications. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and the spread of infection.
