Paradoksu

Paradoksu is a term that appears in Polish and Turkish and serves different grammatical roles in each language. In Polish, paradoksu is the genitive singular of paradoks (paradox) and is used to mark possession or association within a noun phrase, for example kryzys paradoksu (“crisis of the paradox”) and świat paradoksu (“the world of the paradox”). In Turkish, paradoksu is the third-person singular possessive suffix attached to paradoks, producing the form “paradoksu” to mean “its paradox” or to create phrases such as onun paradoksu (“its paradox”) or yazarın paradoksu (“the author’s paradox”).

Etymology and meaning: The root paradoks comes from the Greek paradoxos, via Latin and French, and denotes a statement or situation that contradicts expectations. The Turkish suffix -u is the third-person possessive marker, turning paradoks into paradoksu when indicating ownership. In Polish, paradoksu is a genitive singular ending used in noun phrases to show relation between things, such as “the paradox’s X” or simply “of the paradox.”

Usage notes: Although both languages share the same root, the grammatical function of paradoksu differs: in Polish it is a case form, while in Turkish it is a possessive suffix forming a noun phrase with a possessed noun.
