Paraboldünen

Paraboldünen, also known as parabolic dunes, are a type of sand dune characterized by their elongated, teardrop-shaped form. They are formed by the wind blowing sand in a single direction, typically down a slope. The dunes have a steep upstream side and a gentler downstream side, with the point of the teardrop facing the direction of the wind.

The formation of paraboldünen begins with the accumulation of sand at the base of a slope. As the wind blows, it picks up sand from the lee side of the dune and deposits it on the stoss side, causing the dune to grow. This process continues until the dune reaches a stable shape, with the point of the teardrop facing the wind.

Paraboldünen are common in desert environments, where they can form vast fields of sand dunes. They are also found in other windy environments, such as coastal regions and open plains. Despite their appearance, paraboldünen are not as common as other types of dunes, such as barchan dunes or star dunes, due to the specific conditions required for their formation.
