Paperiformaatit

Paperiformaatit refers to a system of standardized paper sizes. The most widely used system is ISO 216, which is based on the DIN 476 standard. This system divides paper into series, with the most common being the A series.

The A series starts with A0, which has an area of one square meter. Subsequent sizes are derived by halving the longer side of the previous size. This means A1 is half the size of A0, A2 is half the size of A1, and so on. The most common A-series paper size is A4, which is widely used for documents, printing, and stationery.

Other series exist, such as the B series, which provides larger paper sizes than the A series, and the C series, often used for envelopes designed to fit A-series paper. For example, a C4 envelope is designed to hold an A4 sheet without folding. The dimensions in these series are also related by halving the longer side.

While ISO 216 is dominant globally, other systems exist, such as the North American system. This system includes sizes like Letter (8.5 x 11 inches) and Legal (8.5 x 14 inches). These sizes are not directly derived from the ISO metric system and have different proportions. Understanding paper formats is crucial for printing, publishing, and design to ensure compatibility and proper presentation.
