Pantothenatederived

Pantothenatederived is a term used to describe chemical species or biomolecules that originate from pantothenate (vitamin B5) or that incorporate the pantothenate-derived 4'-phosphopantetheine moiety. In biochemistry, this framing highlights the role of pantothenate as a building block for coenzyme A and for related prosthetic groups that participate in acyl transfer reactions.

In metabolism, pantothenate serves as the starting substrate for coenzyme A biosynthesis. It is phosphorylated by pantothenate kinase to 4'-phosphopantothenate and, through subsequent enzymatic steps, converted to dephospho-CoA and then CoA. A closely related pantetheine intermediate carries the 4'-phosphopantetheine moiety that is covalently attached to ACP and other enzymes, acting as a flexible handle for attaching and transferring acyl groups.
