Pandyadynastioiden

The Pandyadynastioiden, commonly known as the Pandya dynasty, was one of the longest-ruling royal families in the history of South India. Their reign primarily spanned the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent, with their capital often situated in Madurai. The Pandyas are mentioned in ancient Tamil literature, as well as in inscriptions and foreign accounts, indicating their significant presence from the early centuries CE.

Historically, the Pandyas are divided into two main periods: the Early Pandyas and the Later Pandyas. The Early Pandyas flourished from around the 6th century BCE to the 10th century CE, though their power waxed and waned. They were contemporaries of the Cheras and the Cholas, and their interactions, often marked by conflict and occasional alliances, shaped the political landscape of the Tamil region. Ancient Sangam literature provides glimpses into the lives and governance of these early rulers.

The Later Pandyas rose to prominence again around the 13th century CE, marking a resurgence of their power. This period saw the Pandyas engaging in significant military campaigns and patronizing arts and architecture. Their rule, however, eventually declined with the advent of the Delhi Sultanate and the subsequent rise of the Vijayanagara Empire. The legacy of the Pandyas is evident in the numerous temples and monuments they commissioned, particularly in and around Madurai, which continue to be important religious and cultural sites.
