Pamorbearing

Pamorbearing is an adjective used to describe objects that carry pamor—a patterned layer created during forging by combining different metals in traditional Southeast Asian metalwork, most often on keris blades. The pamor appears as contrasting runs, bands, or motifs along the blade and is considered an integral feature rather than a mere surface decoration.

Pamor is produced by layering, folding, and diffusing metals such as iron, nickel, brass, or nickel-silver, sometimes followed by etching or tempering to reveal the pattern. The resulting design can be highly varied and may reflect the smith's technique and lineage. The patina and wear of pamorbearing blades are important for assessment, and improper maintenance can damage the pattern.

In Javanese, Malay, and related traditions, pamor is believed to confer symbolic or protective properties and is tied to ritual use, status, and lineage. The choice of pattern, metal combination, and provenance can influence both the blade's meaning and its market value.
