Palaeozoossa

Palaeozoossa is a term used in some educational and informal contexts to describe the study of skeletal remains from the Paleozoic era. The name combines palaeo- with the Latin ossa (bones), signaling a focus on bone- or exoskeleton-based data from ancient life.

Geographically and temporally, palaeozoossa refers to fossil material dating to the Paleozoic period, roughly 541 to 252 million years ago, spanning the Cambrian to the Permian. It encompasses both vertebrate skeletons, such as early fishes and labyrinthodont amphibians, and invertebrate skeletal elements, including trilobite exoskeletons and other ossified structures.

Methodologically, palaeozoossa draws on osteology and paleontology, employing comparative anatomy, histology and bone microstructure analysis, ontogeny studies, taphonomy, and modern imaging techniques like CT scanning and 3D reconstruction to interpret skeletal morphology and function.

Applications include reconstructing growth patterns, locomotion, and ecological roles; assessing skeletal adaptations to changing environments, such as transitional aquatic-to-terrestrial settings and reef ecosystems of the Paleozoic; and informing phylogenetic relationships among Paleozoic organisms.

Despite occasional use in teaching and non-peer-reviewed writing, palaeozoossa is not a widely established term in formal paleontological literature. It is often used informally to emphasize the skeletal evidence as a primary data source in Paleozoic studies.
