Pakojärjestelmät, also known as exhaust systems, are a critical component of internal combustion engines. Their primary function is to safely channel exhaust gases away from the engine and its occupants. Beyond mere expulsion, exhaust systems play a vital role in noise reduction, emissions control, and even engine performance.

The system typically begins with exhaust manifolds, which collect gases from the engine cylinders. These manifolds connect to exhaust pipes that carry the gases through various components. A crucial element is the catalytic converter, a device that uses precious metals to convert harmful pollutants like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and unburned hydrocarbons into less toxic substances such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapor.

Following the catalytic converter, the exhaust gases often pass through one or more mufflers. Mufflers are designed to reduce the noise generated by the combustion process through a series of chambers and baffles that absorb sound waves. Finally, the processed gases are expelled into the atmosphere through the tailpipe.
