Pakketswitching

Pakketswitching, also known as packet switching, is a method of transmitting data over a network where information is divided into small units called packets. Each packet contains a portion of the data, as well as addressing information that allows it to be routed through the network independently of other packets. This approach is fundamental to the operation of the Internet and other modern data networks.

Packet switching was developed in the 1960s as an alternative to circuit switching, which was the dominant method at the time. Circuit switching establishes a dedicated communication path between two points before data transmission begins, which can be inefficient for bursty or intermittent data traffic. In contrast, packet switching allows multiple data streams to share the same network resources, making it more efficient for handling variable data traffic.

In packet switching, packets are routed through the network based on their destination addresses. Each packet may take a different path to reach its destination, and they may arrive out of order. The receiving device reassembles the packets in the correct order to reconstruct the original data. This flexibility allows packet switching networks to adapt to changing network conditions and to efficiently utilize available bandwidth.

Packet switching is the basis for the Internet Protocol (IP), which is the primary protocol used for transmitting data over the Internet. IP networks use packet switching to route data packets between devices, enabling global communication and data exchange. The success of packet switching has led to its widespread adoption in various networking technologies, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and cellular networks.
