Paineilmakäynnistystä, often translated as compressed air starting, is a method used to start internal combustion engines, particularly large diesel engines found in ships, industrial generators, and heavy machinery. Instead of relying on a traditional electric starter motor, these engines are started by introducing compressed air into one or more of the cylinders.

The system typically consists of a high-pressure air reservoir, an air distributor, and valves within the engine cylinders. When the starting lever is engaged, compressed air is directed by the distributor to specific cylinders in a controlled sequence. This air pressure acts on the piston, forcing it downwards and rotating the crankshaft. As the engine begins to turn, fuel is injected, and the combustion process takes over, allowing the engine to run independently.
