The genus contains only one species, Pachycormus discolor. This species is a succulent shrub or small tree that is well-adapted to arid environments. It has a swollen, bottle-shaped trunk that stores water, and its leaves are small and drought-deciduous. The plant produces clusters of small, white flowers followed by characteristic winged fruits.

Pachycormus discolor is often referred to by its common names, such as "Corchero" or "Joconoxtle." It is a popular ornamental plant in arid regions due to its unique appearance and low water requirements. The plant's remarkable ability to store water in its trunk is a key adaptation for survival in its native desert habitat. Despite its succulent nature, Pachycormus discolor is not a true cactus, belonging instead to the soapberry family, Sapindaceae. Its distribution is restricted to the Cape region of Baja California.
