PaO2 represents the partial pressure of oxygen dissolved in arterial blood. It indicates how well oxygen is being transferred from the lungs into the bloodstream. Normal PaO2 levels typically range from 80 to 100 mmHg in healthy individuals breathing room air. Lower values can suggest impaired oxygenation, such as in conditions like pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

PaCO2 represents the partial pressure of carbon dioxide dissolved in arterial blood. It reflects the body's ability to eliminate carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, through respiration. Normal PaCO2 levels generally fall between 35 and 45 mmHg. Elevated PaCO2 (hypercapnia) can indicate hypoventilation, where the lungs are not adequately removing CO2. Conversely, low PaCO2 (hypocapnia) can result from hyperventilation.

Interpreting the PaO2 and PaCO2 values together, along with other ABG parameters like pH and bicarbonate, provides a comprehensive picture of a patient's acid-base balance and respiratory status.
