PVkurvor

PVkurvor refers to the pressure-volume diagram or the family of curves that express the relationship between pressure (P) and volume (V) of a thermodynamic system under specified conditions. On a PV diagram, P is plotted on the vertical axis and V on the horizontal axis. The curve characterizes how a gas or liquid responds as it is compressed or expanded.

For an ideal gas with a fixed amount of substance, the PV relation at constant temperature (isothermal) is P = nRT / V, which appears as a hyperbola. At constant pressure (isobaric), the curve is a horizontal line at P. At constant volume (isochoric), a vertical line is drawn. Real substances deviate from the ideal-gas relation, showing curved isotherms that bend near phase transitions; in the liquid-vapor region, the PV curve exhibits a plateau where liquid and vapor coexist, corresponding to latent heat.

The area under a PV curve for a reversible, quasi-static process equals the work done on or by the system during the process. PVkurvor are used to analyze engine cycles (such as Otto or Rankine cycles), refrigeration cycles, chemical reactions, and material compression tests. They are also used to determine thermodynamic properties such as compressibility, phase boundaries, and critical points.

In practice, PV curves are generated from equations of state, experimental measurements, or computational simulations. The term PVkurvor is used in some Nordic languages as a direct translation of “PV curves” and may appear in classrooms, textbooks, and engineering literature.
