PSAT1

PSAT1, also known as p53-associated protein serum-dependent, is a protein encoded by the PSAT1 gene. This gene is located on chromosome 13 in humans. The PSAT1 gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called phosphoserine aminotransferase 1, which plays a crucial role in the synthesis of the amino acid serine. Serine is a building block for proteins and is also involved in various metabolic pathways, including the production of nucleotides and other important molecules.

The enzyme produced by PSAT1 is involved in the serine biosynthesis pathway, specifically catalyzing the transamination of 3-phosphohydroxypyruvate to 3-phosphoserine. This pathway is essential for cellular growth and function. Dysregulation of serine metabolism, including alterations in PSAT1 activity, has been implicated in various diseases. For instance, mutations or altered expression of PSAT1 have been linked to certain types of cancer, where cancer cells often exhibit increased demand for serine for rapid proliferation. Research also suggests a role for PSAT1 in neurological disorders and metabolic conditions.
