The PRIM1 protein plays a crucial role in DNA replication, specifically in the initiation of DNA synthesis. It is a component of the DNA primase complex, which is responsible for synthesizing short RNA primers. These RNA primers are essential as they provide a free 3'-hydroxyl group for DNA polymerase to begin adding DNA nucleotides. Without these primers, DNA replication would not be able to initiate.
