PONtekniikkaa

PONtekniikkaa refers to passive optical network technology. It is a fiber-optic telecommunications technology that delivers broadband network access to end-users. PONs use a point-to-multipoint architecture where unpowered fiber optic splitters are used to enable a single optical fiber to serve multiple data network users. This is in contrast to point-to-point architectures, where each user has their own dedicated fiber.

The core components of a PON system include the Optical Line Terminal (OLT), which is located at the service provider's central office, and the Optical Network Unit (ONU) or Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which is located at the customer's premises. The OLT is the initiating point of the PON, managing the downstream and upstream traffic. The ONU/ONT is the device that terminates the optical network and provides an interface for the end-user's devices, such as computers or routers.

PON technology is widely used for delivering triple-play services, which include voice, video, and data, over a single fiber optic cable. Its passive nature, meaning it requires no electrical power between the OLT and the ONU/ONT, simplifies network deployment and reduces operational costs. Different standards exist for PON, such as GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) and EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network), offering varying bandwidths and functionalities to meet diverse network demands.
