PKIympäristössä, or PKI environment in English, refers to a system that utilizes Public Key Infrastructure to secure communications and transactions over networks. PKI is a framework that creates, manages, distributes, uses, stores, and revokes digital certificates and managing public-private key pairs. It is widely used to verify the authenticity of devices, users, and information exchanged over the internet.

In a PKI environment, digital certificates play a crucial role. These certificates are issued by a trusted entity known as a Certificate Authority (CA). The CA verifies the identity of an entity, such as a user or a server, and binds this identity to a public key. This binding is done through the issuance of a digital certificate. The certificate can then be used to verify the identity of the entity and to encrypt and decrypt messages.

The PKI environment consists of several components, including the Certificate Authority, Registration Authority (RA), and the end entities (users or devices). The RA is responsible for verifying the identity of the end entities before they are issued a certificate by the CA. The end entities use the certificates to securely communicate with each other.

PKI environments are used in various applications, such as secure email, electronic commerce, and virtual private networks (VPNs). They provide a robust framework for ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of data transmitted over networks. However, managing a PKI environment can be complex and requires careful planning and implementation to ensure its effectiveness and security.
