PIDsäätöjärjestelmä, often referred to as a PID controller, is a widely used control loop feedback mechanism in industrial control systems and a variety of other applications requiring continuously modulated control. The acronym PID stands for Proportional, Integral, and Derivative, which are the three fundamental terms that constitute the controller's algorithm.

The proportional term (P) provides an output that is directly proportional to the current error value. This means that the larger the error, the larger the control output. The integral term (I) accumulates the past errors over time. Its purpose is to eliminate the steady-state error that might remain even with the proportional term active. By integrating past errors, it ensures that the system eventually reaches the desired setpoint. The derivative term (D) anticipates future errors by considering the rate of change of the error. This helps to dampen oscillations and improve the system's response time, preventing overshooting the setpoint.

The PID controller continuously calculates an error value as the difference between a desired setpoint and a measured process variable. It then attempts to minimize the error by adjusting a control output, often to a final control element such as a valve or motor. The effectiveness of a PID controller is determined by the tuning of its three parameters: Kp (proportional gain), Ki (integral gain), and Kd (derivative gain). Proper tuning is crucial for achieving optimal performance, ensuring stability, and meeting specific system requirements. PID controllers are valued for their robustness, simplicity, and wide applicability across diverse engineering fields.
