PGAM1

PGAM1, also known as phosphoglycerate mutase 1, is an enzyme encoded by the PGAM1 gene. It plays a crucial role in glycolysis, a fundamental metabolic pathway responsible for breaking down glucose to produce energy. Specifically, PGAM1 catalyzes the reversible interconversion of 2-phosphoglycerate (2-PG) and 3-phosphoglycerate (3-PG). This reaction is essential for the continued flux of glucose through glycolysis and for the production of ATP, the cell's primary energy currency.

The enzyme exists in different isoforms, with PGAM1 being the muscle-type isozyme. While the primary function of PGAM1 is within glycolysis, research has also implicated it in other cellular processes.
