PDEentsyymien
PDEentsyymien, often referred to as phosphodiesterases (PDEs), are a superfamily of enzymes crucial for cellular signaling. They are responsible for catalyzing the hydrolysis of cyclic nucleotides, specifically cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). By breaking down these second messengers, PDEs play a critical role in regulating a vast array of physiological processes.
There are at least eleven distinct families of PDEs, each with specific substrate preferences and tissue distribution.
The dysregulation of PDE activity has been implicated in numerous diseases, making them important therapeutic targets.
