Oxidantti
Oxidantti is the Finnish word for oxidant. An oxidant, also known as an oxidizing agent or oxidizer, is a substance that tends to bring about oxidation in another substance. It achieves this by accepting electrons from the substance being oxidized. In the process, the oxidant itself is reduced. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that involves the loss of electrons by a molecule, atom, or ion. Therefore, an oxidant is a chemical species that oxidizes other substances. Common examples of oxidants include oxygen, halogens, peroxides, and nitrates. The strength of an oxidant is often described by its oxidizing potential, which measures its tendency to gain electrons. Oxidants are crucial in many chemical processes, including combustion, respiration, and corrosion. They play a significant role in various industrial applications, such as in the production of chemicals, bleaching, and as components in propellants and explosives. In biological systems, oxidants are involved in cellular metabolism, but excessive amounts can lead to oxidative stress, which is implicated in aging and various diseases.
