Oversown

Oversown refers to a specific method of establishing a new pasture or forage crop by planting seeds into an existing stand of vegetation. This technique is distinct from conventional pasture renovation, which typically involves tillage and the complete destruction of the old sod. Oversowing aims to introduce desirable species without significantly disturbing the existing plant community.

The primary goal of oversowing is to improve the nutritional quality, yield, or species composition of a pasture. It is often employed in areas where soil disturbance is undesirable due to erosion risk or the presence of sensitive ecosystems. The process involves broadcasting seeds of a new species, such as clover, ryegrass, or other legumes and grasses, directly onto the surface of the existing pasture. Grazing animals often play a crucial role in oversowing. Their hooves can help press the seeds into the soil, improving germination rates.
