Overrationing

Overrationing is a term used to describe a situation where a system or process is allocated more resources than it can effectively utilize or process. This can occur in various contexts, including computing, supply chain management, and even personal time management. In computing, overrationing might involve assigning too many tasks to a central processing unit (CPU), leading to decreased performance due to excessive context switching and resource contention. This can manifest as unresponsiveness or slower execution times, despite the apparent abundance of available processing power.

In supply chains, overrationing can refer to overstocking inventory. Companies might order more raw materials or finished goods than are demanded by the market, leading to increased storage costs, potential spoilage or obsolescence, and tied-up capital. This can be a result of inaccurate demand forecasting or a strategy to avoid stockouts that backfires due to overzealous ordering.

On a personal level, overrationing can happen when an individual attempts to schedule too many activities or commitments within a given timeframe. This can lead to stress, burnout, and a reduction in the quality of performance for each individual task, as time and energy are spread too thin.
