Overfladetræthed, also known as surface tension, is a property of liquids that causes the surface of a liquid to behave as if it were covered by a stretched elastic membrane. This phenomenon is due to the cohesive forces between liquid molecules, which are stronger than the adhesive forces between the liquid and other surfaces. Surface tension is responsible for the ability of some insects, such as water striders, to walk on water, and for the formation of droplets and bubbles.

It is influenced by factors such as temperature, the nature of the liquid, and the presence of impurities. For example, surface tension decreases with increasing temperature because the kinetic energy of the molecules increases, weakening the cohesive forces.
