Ottoprosessit refer to processes related to the Otto cycle, a thermodynamic cycle that describes the functioning of a typical spark-ignition internal combustion engine. This cycle is a conceptual model used to understand the fundamental principles of how gasoline engines convert heat energy into mechanical work. The Otto cycle consists of four distinct strokes: intake, compression, power (or combustion), and exhaust.

During the intake stroke, a mixture of fuel and air is drawn into the cylinder as the piston moves down. The compression stroke follows, where the piston moves upward, compressing the fuel-air mixture. This compression increases the temperature and pressure of the mixture. The power stroke is initiated by a spark plug igniting the compressed mixture. The resulting explosion generates high pressure, forcing the piston down and producing mechanical work. Finally, in the exhaust stroke, the piston moves upward again, expelling the burnt gases from the cylinder.

While the theoretical Otto cycle is an idealization, it provides a valuable framework for analyzing real-world internal combustion engines. Factors such as friction, heat loss, and incomplete combustion mean that actual engine performance deviates from the ideal Otto cycle.
